Riccardo Haupt

it

CEO of Chora and Will Media, podcaster and trail runner. Tireless, optimistic, leads one of Italy’s most innovative media groups.

Describe yourself in one adjective.

Running (I know, it’s not an adjective).

What's your favorite word?

Endurance.

What values guide your choices every day?

Do what’s good for the group you lead or belong to.

What job did you dream of doing as a child?

Archaeologist—blame Indiana Jones.

What's the achievement you're most proud of as a manager?

The human quality of the 100-plus people we’ve brought together over the years at the helm of Chora and Will. Anyone who walks into our office is struck by it.

Where have you failed in your career, and what did you learn from that experience?

I keep making the mistake of not taking clear-cut decisions on the projects I lead. Compromise is essential to move forward, but the moment you overdo it, you find yourself working on things whose meaning you no longer recognize.

What's the hardest challenge you've faced and overcome?

Taking the reins of an organization, Will, that had been conceived and nurtured in its early years by someone else, then bringing it inside another organization, Chora, conceived and nurtured by other people, and finally merging them into what they are today.

What's the best advice you've ever received, and who gave it to you?

Don't travel on a low battery (yours, not your phone's). People expect optimism and vision from their leaders. Two things you can't offer if you're constantly running on empty (said by Stefano Portu in a wonderful episode of our CEO Insights).

What quality do you value most in people?

Kindness, and the ability to stay calm even in the storm.

Name a manager or entrepreneur you admire.

Internationally, Dario Amodei of Anthropic. In Italy, Andrea Guerra of Prada.

Who do you consider your mentor—the person you've learned the most from professionally?

Alessandro Tommasi, founder of Will, and Barbara Salabè, CEO of BeWater, the group we’re part of.

Name three brands you love.

Spotify, Patagonia, Financial Times.

What song do you never get tired of listening to?

Just Like Heaven by The Cure.

What film do you never get tired of watching?

Hook by Steven Spielberg.

What book has taught you the most?

Endurance by Alfred Lansing.

What sport has taught you the most?

Trail running.

What do you follow regularly to stay informed, inspired, and keep growing?

Tons of things. If I had to choose based on the last quarter: the Acquired podcast to learn, the No Mercy No Malice newsletter to connect the dots, the Financial Times slipped under my door in the morning to make sense of things, and the Black Box podcast to open my eyes.

Which app do you use the most?

Spotify and Strava, often in combo.

What are you most passionate about outside of work?

Sports and holidays. Day trips, parties, and travel with friends.

What's the greatest invention of all time?

The internal combustion engine.

Which historical figure do you feel closest to?

Churchill has always entertained me, on a human level.

What change would you like to see in the world?

I wish we could find an antidote to collective fear—humanity’s greatest evil, from Manzoni’s plague to the present day.

What habit has improved your life most in recent years?

The morning workout.

What's your motto?

Come on, we’ll pull through this time too!
